What is the Council’s role in protecting our environment?

To:
  • Protect and maintain our green belt and our other reserves and green spaces
  • Actively promote the use of facilities at Zealandia and Otari-Wilton Bush to teach Wellingtonians about our natural heritage
  • Make sure Wellington’s public buildings and public spaces have architectural value – I like the way sculptures are scattered round Wellington
  • Construct and maintain in public ownership water, stormwater and sewage facilities that have minimal negative impact on our surroundings
  • Ensure every part of the city is served with adequate waste disposal and the best feasible recycling facilities
  • Encourage a reduction in carbon emissions wherever feasible
  • Develop district plans that enhance our natural and built environments and provide facilities that allow Wellingtonians and their communities to thrive – and stick to them save in exceptional circumstances
  • See that all new buildings and renovations are well constructed
  • Provide an infrastructure that allows people to get around the city easily and safely by public or private transport , walking, jogging, cycling or running
  • Maintain effective noise control
